Version of 3 October 2026
This is an earlier version of our Terms of Service, published on 3 October 2026. It applied to every account from 3 October 2026 to 9 October 2026. The current version is here, and every version is listed here.
TeXType is a place to write LaTeX with the people you work with. You write, we keep your work safe and compile it, and your work stays yours: we claim nothing in it, we never use it to train AI models, and you can take all of it with you at any time.
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) describe our commitments to you, and your rights and responsibilities when you use TeXType. Please read them, and write to us if anything is unclear. If you don’t agree to these Terms, don’t use TeXType.
We’ve made these Terms available under the same Creative Commons ShareAlike license as the ones we adapted them from, so you’re welcome to reuse them too (see the end of this page).
These Terms govern your access to and use of the website at textype.io and the editor, compiler, version history, sharing, sync and other features we provide there (our “Services”). By accessing or using any part of our Services, you agree to these Terms and to the policies they refer to, including our Privacy Policy (together, the “Agreement”).
“We”, “us” and “our” mean TEXTYPE LLC, a Massachusetts limited liability company. “You” means any person or organization using our Services. If you use them on behalf of an organization, you confirm that you’re authorized to accept the Agreement for it, and the Agreement binds that organization as well as you.
To use most of our Services you need an account. You sign in with an existing account at a provider we support (today, Google, GitHub or Microsoft); TeXType never holds a password for you.
You agree to keep the email address on your account current, so that we can reach you about it. We send email only about your account, your projects and your plan (for example, a change to these Terms, a subscription starting or ending, or a payment that failed); we don’t send marketing.
You’re responsible for activity under your account and for keeping the account you sign in with secure. An account is for one person: don’t share it. Tell us straight away at hello@textype.io if you think someone else has used your account. If we believe an account has been compromised, we may suspend it while we sort it out with you.
The Privacy Policy says what we collect and how we handle it.
Our Services are not directed to children. You’re not allowed to access or use our Services if you’re under the age of 13 (or 16 in Europe). If you register as a user or otherwise use our Services, you represent that you’re at least 13 (or 16 in Europe). You may use our Services only if you can legally form a binding contract with us. In other words, if you’re under 18 years of age (or the legal age of majority where you live), you can only use our Services under the supervision of a parent or legal guardian who agrees to the Agreement.
Everything you put into a project (text, figures, bibliographies, comments, suggestions, and the files synced from a git remote) is your “Content”, and it stays yours. We claim no ownership of it.
You give us permission to do with your Content only what running the Services requires: to store it, compile it, keep its versions, back it up, check it for malware and abuse as section 8 describes, show it to the members of the projects it’s in, and sync it with a git remote an owner connects. That permission lasts as long as we hold the Content: until the project it’s in is permanently deleted (including from the trash), and then until the backups expire on the schedule in the Privacy Policy. Content you added to a project that carries on without you stays licensed for as long as that project exists.
We look at the contents of a project only in the cases our Privacy Policy lists: when you ask for help with it, to investigate abuse or an attack, when it’s needed to keep the service working, or when the law requires it. We never use your Content to train AI models, and we don’t hand it to anyone except as the Privacy Policy describes.
Every saved version records the name and email address of the person who made it, and that record stays in the project’s history even after someone leaves it. That is how the history stays honest. Text deleted from a file also stays in the project’s history, so that it can be restored, for as long as the project exists.
Owners, editors and viewers. A project’s members are owners, editors or viewers. Editors can change the project, and viewers can only read it. Every project has a main owner and may have other owners. Any owner can invite people and remove them (except the main owner), change their roles, create and revoke invite links, connect a git remote and push the project’s whole history to it, and move the project to the trash or delete it permanently. Give the owner role only to people you trust with all of that.
Invite links. An invite link admits anyone who has it, with the role it was made for, for 30 days or until an owner revokes it. Treat it like a password, and revoke it once the people you meant have joined.
What you give the others. When you add Content to a shared project, you give its other members permission to use, copy, change and share it as part of that project, including in the documents it produces and in copies pushed to a git remote. That permission continues after you leave the project or delete your account. It doesn’t transfer your ownership, and it doesn’t decide who is an author.
Leaving. If you leave a project, are removed from it, or delete your account, what you contributed stays in the project and its history.
Other people’s content. A shared project contains Content from everyone in it. We haven’t reviewed, and can’t review, all of it, and we’re not responsible for it. In particular:
Plans. TeXType has a free plan and a paid one, Pro, described on the pricing page. Its plans, their limits and their prices may change, in the ways this section describes.
Who you’re buying from. Pro is sold to you through Link, Stripe’s payment service, as the merchant of record: Link takes the payment, adds whatever sales tax or VAT applies where you are, sends your receipts and invoices, and handles payment questions and disputes. The charge appears on your card statement as LINK.COM* TEXTYPE. Card details go to Stripe and never reach us.
Automatic renewal. Pro is paid in advance, by the month or by the year, and renews automatically at the end of each term, charging the payment method on file the then-current price for your plan, until you cancel. Before each yearly renewal, and before each yearly anniversary of a monthly plan, you’ll get an email reminder at least a week ahead with the date, the amount and how to cancel.
Cancelling. You can cancel at any time, online, from your account page (“Manage billing”) or from your Link account, up to the moment of renewal. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Pro continues until the end of the term you’ve paid for, and your account then moves to the free plan without losing anything in it.
Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, Pro continues for a short grace period while Stripe retries and we email you. If it still hasn’t been paid, the account moves to the free plan, again without losing anything.
Price and plan changes. What you pay for is fixed for that term: the features and the price of your plan won’t change during a month or year you’ve already paid for. A change to either applies from a later renewal, and we’ll email you at least a week before it does, so you can cancel first if you prefer.
Fall discount. A first subscription to Pro started by the end of 1 November 2026, Eastern time, is discounted from the regular price, as the pricing page shows: for its first year if it is yearly, or for its first 12 months if it is monthly. After that, it renews at the regular price then current. Between 7 and 21 days before the discount ends, we’ll email you the price you pay now, the price you’ll pay after, the date it changes and how to cancel. The discount is once per person, and does not apply to a later subscription or carry over to a different plan.
Early-access price. Before the fall discount, the first 100 people to subscribe to Pro yearly at the early-access price were promised that price for as long as the Services are available. If you are one of them, you keep Pro at that price, and it is never raised for you, for as long as you stay on a yearly plan. Switching from yearly to monthly gives it up. The early-access monthly price was introductory and was never kept.
Refunds. If Pro isn’t for you, write to hello@textype.io within 14 days of your first payment for Pro and it will be refunded in full. The refund of a first payment is available once per person; subscribing again after a refund does not start a new 14 day cycle. Renewals, monthly or yearly, are not refunded; before each yearly renewal we email you a reminder, with the date, the amount and how to cancel. If we end Pro or close TeXType, the unused part of any paid term is refunded.
Buying in good faith. Buy Pro only if you mean to use it with the account you sign up with. Every payment, even one refunded in full, costs us fees that aren’t returned, so subscribing in order to ask for a refund, or repeating a subscribe-and-refund cycle, even with a separate account, is a breach of these Terms. Disputing a charge with your bank without first asking us to fix it is treated the same way. We reserve the right to cancel any such subscriptions immediately, to close the accounts as section 14 describes, and to refuse refunds for such breaches of these Terms. None of this limits a refund the law gives you.
Payment disputes. Pro is paused while any dispute about a payment for it is open, whatever the reason for the dispute, and returns if the dispute is resolved in our favour. After a dispute is decided against us, or after a second refund, starting a new subscription needs our approval: write to hello@textype.io.
Taxes. Prices on the pricing page don’t include sales tax or VAT, which Stripe adds at checkout where it applies.
Consumers in the EU, UK and Switzerland. The 14-day full refund above applies to you too, and is at least as generous as your statutory right to withdraw from the purchase within 14 days.
We love hearing from you. If you send us ideas or suggestions about TeXType, we may use them freely, without owing you anything for them.
You agree that your use of our Services:
We may scan files uploaded to TeXType, automatically, for malware and for content that breaks these Terms, ourselves or through a provider working for us. We may remove or block a file that a scan finds harmful, and a person may then look at it, as the Privacy Policy describes.
We respect the intellectual property of others, and ask the same of everyone who uses TeXType. If you believe Content on TeXType infringes your copyright, send a notice to our designated agent, registered with the U.S. Copyright Office (TEXTYPE LLC, Attn: DMCA Agent, 82 Wendell Ave, Suite 100, Pittsfield, MA 01201, U.S.A. Phone: +1 315-510-9089. Email: hello@textype.io), including the information the Digital Millennium Copyright Act requires (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)). We’ll respond to valid notices, including by removing or disabling access to the material. Where material can’t be removed on its own, for example from a project’s version history, we may disable access to the whole project until the matter is resolved.
If we remove your Content because of a notice and you believe that was a mistake, you can send our designated agent a counter-notice with the information 17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3) requires, including a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you believe the material was removed by mistake. We’ll pass it to the person who complained, and restore the material 10 to 14 business days later unless they tell us they’ve gone to court.
We keep a record of the notices we receive about each account, and we close the accounts of repeat infringers.
The Agreement doesn’t transfer any of our intellectual property to you. The TeXType name and logo are ours. The templates we provide for new projects are yours to use, change and publish, without restriction or attribution. TeXType relies on open-source software, including TeX Live, whose components remain under their own licenses; nothing here limits your rights under those licenses.
Some features connect TeXType to services run by others: signing in with Google, GitHub or Microsoft, syncing with GitHub or GitLab, importing from Zotero or Mendeley, paying through Stripe. When you use one, that provider’s own terms and privacy policy also apply to what you do there, and we’re not responsible for it. If a provider changes or stops its service, the feature that depends on it may change or stop too.
Git sync. When an owner connects a git remote, they authorize us to use the access token they provide to act on that repository for them: to check which account the token belongs to and when it expires, to list the repositories it can reach, to push the project’s history, and to pull changes back. Everything pushed, including every member’s Content and the names and email addresses on its versions, is then held by that host under its own terms. Those terms may allow uses we don’t; some hosts may train AI models on the content they store. Our promise not to train AI on your Content covers TeXType; it can’t bind a host an owner chooses. We email the other members of a project when a remote is first connected to it. Owners: connect only a remote your collaborators would be comfortable with.
Reference managers. When you link Zotero or Mendeley, you authorize us to use the key or sign-in you provide to read your libraries, never to change them: to list the libraries and collections it can reach, and to import the one you choose into a project and refresh it there. A library you link into a project is shared with that project’s members: they see its entries, and anyone who can edit the project can refresh it. Unlink it from the project, or disconnect the service from your account page, at any time.
We work to keep TeXType running and your work safe: it’s monitored, every change is tested before it goes out, and projects are backed up every night to a second provider. Even so, we can’t promise any particular uptime. If you have a deadline, keep a copy; the zip download and git sync exist for exactly this.
If TeXType is going to shut down, you’ll get at least 30 days’ notice by email and every opportunity to download your projects first.
We may change these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect a change to the Services or for legal reasons. When we do, we’ll update the date at the top of this page, and keep the earlier version, which we’ll send you if you ask. If a change matters, we’ll also tell you at least 30 days before it takes effect, by email and on the sign-in page. Changes apply going forward. If you don’t agree to a change, you can stop using TeXType and cancel any subscription before it takes effect; continuing to use TeXType after that means you accept it.
Deleting your account. You can stop using TeXType at any time, and delete your account from your account page. Projects you own are deleted, unless they have another owner, who then becomes their owner. You’re removed from the projects you don’t own. Projects in your trash go the same way, and those with no other owner are deleted at once. When a project with other members is deleted this way, we email them to say so. The Privacy Policy says exactly what remains afterwards, and for how long.
When we suspend or close an account. We may suspend or close an account that breaks the Agreement. Unless the breach is serious enough that it would be irresponsible to wait, we’ll tell you first. We may also close an account without cause, with at least 30 days’ notice by email; if it is a paid account, we’ll refund the unused part of its term.
When we close an account, we’ll give its owner at least 30 days to download their projects, unless the law or the nature of the breach prevents it, and then delete them as the Privacy Policy describes. A project with another owner passes to them. The members of a project that would otherwise be deleted will be told, and given the same 30 days.
What continues. Sections 4 and 5 (as they apply to backups and to shared projects), 6 (as it applies to refunds and buying in good faith), 7, 9 and 15 to 20 continue after the Agreement ends.
Our Services are provided “as is”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties of any kind, express or implied, including the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. We don’t promise that the Services will be free of errors or that access to them will be continuous or uninterrupted.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we won’t be liable for (i) any indirect, special, incidental or consequential damages; (ii) the cost of substitute products or services; (iii) interruption of use; or (iv) any amount greater than $50 or the fees you paid us in the twelve months before the claim, whichever is greater. Loss or corruption of data falls under that limit. We’re not liable for failures or delays caused by things beyond our reasonable control. These limits don’t apply to loss caused by our gross negligence or wilful misconduct. Nothing in the Agreement limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
You agree to indemnify us against claims, losses and costs (including reasonable legal fees) arising from Content you add to TeXType or from your breach of the Agreement or the law.
You may not use TeXType if you’re located in a country or region subject to comprehensive U.S. sanctions, or if you’re on a U.S. list of prohibited or restricted parties. We may block access where we believe it’s needed to comply with U.S. export controls and sanctions.
The Agreement is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, U.S.A., without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes will be heard in the state courts located in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, or the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Nothing in the Agreement takes away rights you have as a consumer under the mandatory laws of the place where you live.
The Agreement is the whole agreement between you and us about the Services. If any part of it is found unenforceable, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a term right away, we haven’t given up the right to enforce it later. We may transfer the Agreement to a successor that takes over the Services, and we’ll tell you if we do; you may transfer it only with our written consent. These Terms were written in English (US); if we translate them, the English version controls.
