Using AI tools with TeXType

Last updated October 4, 2026

You can connect an AI app, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, to your TeXType account. It can then read your projects, compile them, and, where a project allows it, propose edits as suggestions that a person accepts. This guide shows how to set it up, and what it can and can’t do.

AI tools are being opened gradually. If you don’t see AI tools in a project’s settings or on your account page, they aren’t open to your account yet.

What this is

TeXType has no AI of its own. Instead, it lets an AI app you already use work with your projects. The app connects to TeXType at https://textype.io/mcp, using MCP, the standard way AI apps reach other services.

  • One connection per account. You sign in to TeXType once from the AI app, and choose Read or Read and suggest wherever a project allows it. You don’t pick projects when you connect.
  • Each project decides. A project’s AI tools setting says what AI tools may do in it, and TeXType checks it on every request. A project with AI tools Off is invisible to AI tools.
  • Your access, no more. The app works on your behalf. It can reach only projects you can open, and only do what you could do there.
  • One project at a time. A connection that read another project in the last 30 minutes can’t write to this one, so text can’t be copied from one project into another. Work in one project per conversation.

What AI tools can’t do

  • Change your text directly. They propose suggestions, and a person accepts or rejects each one.
  • Push to git, sync to GitHub or GitLab, or send email.
  • Reach a project whose AI tools setting is Off.
  • See your account: your email address, billing, other connections or access tokens.

The other way: the assistant in the editor

If you have an API key from Anthropic or OpenAI, you can use the assistant built into the editor instead. It runs in your browser and sends what it reads straight to the provider you choose, with your own key. TeXType never receives the key or the conversation.

  1. Open a project whose AI tools setting is Read only or Suggestions.
  2. Click Assistant in the project’s toolbar, read the note, and click I understand.
  3. Choose Anthropic or OpenAI, pick a model, paste your API key, and click Connect. Make a key for TeXType alone, with a spending limit.
  4. Pick a mode: Ask answers questions, Plan writes a plan for a change, and Suggest proposes edits. You review each edit before it becomes a suggestion. Suggest needs the project set to Suggestions, on Pro.

The key stays in that browser tab’s memory and is forgotten when you close or reload it, as is the conversation. The project’s other members are emailed the first time the assistant is used in it. A Claude Pro or Max subscription can’t be used here, because Anthropic doesn’t allow other apps to use one; connect TeXType to Claude instead, as described below.

Before you start

Turn AI tools on in a project

Every project starts with AI tools Off. A project’s owner changes it: open the project, click the settings button in its toolbar, and choose under AI tools. Everyone in the project can see the setting. A change applies at once, including to apps already connected.

Off
The default. AI tools can’t see the project at all: not its name, files, comments or PDF.
Read only
AI tools can read and search the files, compile, read the compile log, and read the comments and suggestions. Turning on Read only lets AI tools connected by anyone with access to the project, including through an organization or group share, read it.
Suggestions
They can also propose edits as suggestions, and add comments and replies. This works for owners and editors (not viewers), when the project’s owner is on Pro. Turning on Suggestions lets AI tools connected by anyone with access to the project, including through an organization or group share, write suggestions here.

On your account page you can choose the setting that new projects you create start with.

Pro, for suggestions

Reading works on every plan. Suggestions need the project’s owner to be on Pro. On a Free project set to Suggestions, AI tools can still read.

Connect your AI app

Whichever app you use, connecting goes the same way:

  1. Add TeXType to the app, with the address https://textype.io/mcp.
  2. The app opens TeXType in your browser. Sign in if you aren’t already.
  3. Choose Read and suggest wherever a project allows it (chosen at first) or Read, and click Connect. The page also says how many of your projects the app can reach now.
  4. The browser returns you to the app, which can now see the projects that allow AI tools.

Claude (claude.ai, Claude Desktop and the mobile apps)

  1. On claude.ai, open Customize, then Connectors. (Some accounts show it as Settings, then Connectors.)
  2. Click + or Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it TeXType, enter https://textype.io/mcp as the URL, and click Add.
  4. Click Connect beside it, and sign in to TeXType when asked.

Claude Desktop and the mobile apps pick up the connector from your claude.ai account; there is nothing to add there. On the Free plan you can have one custom connector. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector in Organization settings, then Connectors, before members can connect it.

Claude Code

In a terminal:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user textype https://textype.io/mcp

--scope user makes TeXType available in every folder you use Claude Code in. Then, in Claude Code, type /mcp, choose textype, and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens TeXType’s sign-in.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT connects to TeXType through its developer mode, on the web. OpenAI offers developer mode on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts. In a workspace, an admin may need to allow it first.

  1. Turn on developer mode. On a personal account it is under Settings, then Security and login.
  2. Create an app (a connector) for a remote MCP server: in the apps or plugins section of settings, click + or Create.
  3. Name it TeXType, enter https://textype.io/mcp as the URL, choose OAuth to sign in, and save.
  4. Sign in to TeXType when asked.

OpenAI changes these menus often, and their names differ between plans. If yours don’t match, follow OpenAI’s page linked below.

Codex

In a terminal:

codex mcp add textype --url https://textype.io/mcp
codex mcp login textype

The second command opens TeXType’s sign-in in your browser. In Codex, /mcp lists your servers and whether each is signed in.

The providers’ own instructions

These steps were checked against each provider’s documentation on October 4, 2026.

  • Claude: custom connectors (Anthropic Help Center)
  • Claude Code: MCP (Claude Code docs)
  • ChatGPT: developer mode (OpenAI docs)
  • Codex: MCP (OpenAI docs)

Working with it

Ask in your own words. Some things to try:

  • “List my TeXType projects.”
  • “Summarize the thesis project, chapter by chapter.”
  • “Compile the paper and explain the errors in the log.”
  • “Find every \cite in the introduction that isn’t in references.bib.”
  • “Proofread section 2 and propose fixes as suggestions.”

The first time the app uses a TeXType tool, it may ask your permission. Claude and Claude Code let you allow a tool once or always. ChatGPT asks you to confirm each action that changes something, unless you tell it to remember your choice for the conversation. Codex asks according to its approval settings.

Keep to one project per conversation. To work on another, start a new conversation; after reading one project, a connection waits 30 minutes before it can write to a different one.

Reviewing AI suggestions

What an AI tool proposes appears in the project’s review panel, like any other suggestion or comment, for everyone in the project to see.

  • Each one is under the name of the member who connected the app, labeled with the app, for example AI-assisted (Claude).
  • The AI tool’s reason for the change is shown under it.
  • When only the start of a long suggestion is shown, click Show it in full before you can click Accept. You accept what you have read.
  • Accept puts the change in the text, recorded in the history like any edit. Reject leaves the text as it was.
  • Reject all from this connection rejects every open suggestion that one connection made.
  • Owners can click Delete all from this connection to delete everything one connection wrote in the project: its suggestions, the comment threads it started, and its replies. Changes already accepted stay in the text.

Managing connections

Your account page lists every app you connected under AI tools connected, with what it may do (Read, or Read and suggest), when you connected it, and when it was last used.

  • Revoke ends a connection at once. To use the app again, connect it again from the app.
  • To switch between Read and Read and suggest, connect again from the app and choose the other. The new connection replaces the app’s earlier one.
  • To keep AI tools out of one project, set its AI tools to Off. That applies to every member’s connection.

Troubleshooting

The app says the connection is read only
You chose Read when you connected. Connect again and choose Read and suggest. The project also has to be set to Suggestions, and its owner has to be on Pro.
A project isn’t listed
Its AI tools setting is Off. Ask one of its owners to change it, or change it yourself if you own it.
“Can’t write here yet”
The connection read another project in the last 30 minutes. Start a new conversation for this project, or wait, then ask again.
Signing in keeps starting over
Remove TeXType’s saved sign-in in the app (disconnect the connector, or in Claude Code and Codex, log out of the server), then connect again.
The connector shows an old TeXType logo
The app takes the icon from Google’s cache of site icons. It updates on its own.
AI tools don’t appear at all
They are being opened gradually and may not be open to your account yet.

Privacy and safety

  • TeXType has no AI of its own and never uses your work to train AI.
  • What an AI app reads goes to that app’s provider (Anthropic, OpenAI or another), under your agreement with them, not TeXType’s. Some consumer plans let the provider train on it. If that matters for a project, keep its AI tools Off.
  • Text in a shared project can contain instructions aimed at an AI, written by anyone who can edit it. Read every suggestion before you accept it.
  • AI tools Off keeps connected apps out of a project. It doesn’t limit the members themselves, who can still copy or download what they can open.
